Old Wisdom for a New World: Leveraging Past Lessons for a Safer Future
-
Our world is a whirlwind of complexity and uncertainty, and the introduction of new technologies often amplifies these risks. It's easy to assume that with each technological leap, we need to start from scratch, discarding the lessons of the past. But the truth is, history offers invaluable insights that can help us navigate the challenges of today's innovations.
-
Let's take a journey through time, exploring how past mistakes and successes have shaped our understanding of technology. By examining the "ghostly" echoes of earlier innovations, we can uncover timeless principles that remain relevant even in the face of cutting-edge advancements.
-
Today, generative AI is at the forefront of technological progress. But as we explore its potential, we must also confront the risks and challenges it presents. By applying the wisdom gleaned from past experiences, we can build safer, more reliable systems and applications. Ultimately, the key to a safer future lies in recognizing that innovation isn't always about starting anew. It's about building upon the foundation of knowledge and experience that has come before us. By embracing this approach, we can harness the power of technology while minimizing its risks.

Beyond Automation: AI and the Future of Human Work
Our industry has been transformed by new technologies, radically changing how we work. Thirty years ago, deployment cycles took 3-5 years; today, they happen in seconds. This rapid pace is largely due to our focus on investing in tools that boost developer productivity. We're still driven to create tools that simplify developers' work and make it easier for others to join the field. Many companies are heavily invested in enhancing productivity. However, the abundance of productivity tools doesn't automatically lead to increased productivity. Companies need to examine and adapt their internal systems and processes, especially in decision-making and information sharing. This is where many companies stumble. They heavily invest in areas where developers are coding but neglect other crucial areas. The impact of these changes is significant for enterprise businesses, often with failure indicators appearing too late for recovery.

Tricking Your Product Manager Into Prioritizing Tech Debt
Developer experience is crucial for retaining top engineering talent, yet many organizations struggle with this due to technical debt. According to our 2024 DevEx survey, nearly 60% of developers cite technical debt as a top negative factor in their experience. The way PMs and engineers work together is a critical point in time where tech debt will be addressed or grow out of control. This talk will explore how engineers can collaborate with product managers to priorities and reduce technical debt
